If you plan to attend the meeting, please send your travel information to Pam Griego (pgriego@lternet.edu) at the Network Office (505-272-7278) so we can coordinate room assignments.  There will be a mix of single and double rooms, and those that respond quickly will be assigned to single rooms.  If you have a preference for roommates, please let us know.  It is important that you communicate your departure date (Saturday or Sunday) to us soon so we can reserve sufficient space for Saturday night.

Lodging Information    

A block of rooms has been reserved for the LTER Coordinating Committee meeting at the New England Center on the campus of the University of New Hampshire. The LTER Network Office will pay room charges directly for all participants, except for long-distance telephone charges, liquor, early arrivals, late departures, and other incidentals, which must be paid individually.  Information about the New England Center can be obtained at http://www.newenglandcenter.com.

Airline Travel

Participants should make their own arrangements for airline travel.  Manchester is the closest (and least congested) local airport and Boston Logan is the alternative.  Note the possibility of inexpensive airfares on either Southwest or America West. 

The Network Office will reimburse airfares for official site delegates (one per site) and committee chairs.  Airfares for other participants in the Science Theme meeting will be reimbursed by individual sites. 

Please read the Ground Transportation section and the Field Trip section before deciding whether to fly into Boston or Manchester.

Ground Transportation

Public transportation is available from Manchester (NH) Airport and from Logan Airport (Boston).  The New England Center recommends the Hampton Shuttle (1-800-225-6426 or http://www.hamptonshuttle.com).  You should coordinate your own air and local travel.  Information about the Hampton Shuttle and other options is located at http://www.newenglandcenter.com/concierge.htm. The Hampton Shuttle costs $45 one way and $80 per person round trip to Logan or Manchester Airport. The Hampton Shuttle is by reservation.

C&J Trailways offers bus transportation between Logan Airport and UNH – Durham (http://www.cjtrailways.com/ or 1-800-258-7111 / 1-603-430-1100). C&J Trailways is by far the least expensive way to go - $18 one way, $32 roundtrip from Boston’s Logan airport to Durham. 

The C&J Trailways schedule between Durham and the airport is limited.  Options increase if you are willing to take a taxi to the main bus terminal at South Station (10-30 minutes depending on traffic). There is a direct bus from the airport to Durham at 7:50 PM that arrives in Durham at 9:40 PM.  From Boston there are buses at noon, 5, 6 and 8 PM.  Returning to Boston, there are buses at 8:20 AM and 3:20 PM arriving at the airport at 10:15 and 5:15, respectively. Another option for travel between either airport and UNH is the Flightline Shuttle (1-603-436-5860 or www.flightline.com).  They charge $41 per person one way to Manchester and $51 per person one way to Logan.

If there are enough people coming into either airport at a close interval, we will also attempt to transport these people via MBL or UNH vans.  Do let us know your arrival and departure times as soon as possible so that we can try to accommodate as many people as possible.

Field Trip

On Saturday afternoon we will provide a field tour of the Plum Island Ecosystems research site.  The Ipswich and Parker River watersheds and the Plum Island Sound Estuary are approximately 45 minutes from the UNH campus.  Early autumn weather in New Hampshire ranges from cool to hot. Plan your attire accordingly or check the weather reports. The field trip might include hikes across intertidal salt marsh so be prepared for water and mud.  If it rains be prepared for even more water … There are no bugs at this time of year!

It will be possible to leave the LTER CC meeting at the close of the field trip BEFORE returning to UNH.  The PIE field station is 100 yards from a commuter rail train to Boston.  For those that are interested, at the end of the field trip (~5:00 PM) we can leave you at the train station.  On Saturdays, the first train to Boston is at 6:07 PM.  It arrives at North Station in Boston at 7:01 PM : fare $4.50.  From North Station there are 2 choices, taxi or subways.  If adventurous try the subway. However, the subway ($1.00 fare) requires several changes.  Take the Yellow or Green Line to the Blue line at either Govt Center or State Street.  Take the Blue line to the Airport.  At the airport you get on a shuttle that makes a sweep of all the terminals.  I estimate that it will take 45 minutes to get to your terminal from the time that the train arrives at North Station.  This includes waiting time (using max wait time) and riding time.
